This is a true 'Heritage Home", of great historical and cultural significance. Though this is a Christian household, in 1545 AD, a vigraha (idol) of Lord Krishna was given shelter here,en route to the famous Temple at Ambalapuzha. To commemorate this event, Pooradam Thirunal Deva Narayanan, the Raja of Chempakassery, declared that every year, a great water carnival would be held here, when magnificent 'Chundan Valloms' (Snakeboats) would race against one another. The race was to commence from the 'Kadavu' or waterfront of the Mappilassery House, after certain ceremonies and functions.
These ceremonies, known as 'Moolakazcha', continue even today, 500 years later. Every year, in the Malayalam month of Mithunam, on Moolam day, representatives of the Temple come to the house with gifts (including the famous 'Ambalapuzha Palpayasam')and reverentially pay their respects to the 'Vazhakoombu Vilakku' (a special lamp presented by the Raja which is kept perpetually burning),representing Lord Krishna. According to popular belief, on Moolam Day, Lord Krishna lives not in the Temple, but in Mappilassery House!
The traditions followed by Mappilassery House represents all that is best in the cultural and religious ambience of Kerala. Truly a symbol of the fabled spirit of religious tolerance of the state!
